Strength Training for Everyone — Advice from Douglasville Personal Trainer Dave Hansey
Everyone needs strength training. PLAIN AND SIMPLE.
Not the SAME exercises – that is for sure. But everyone needs some form of strength training.
As a refresher — strength training should be done with heavy weights. Classes with weights are AEROBICS — they are not strength training and they do nothing for your bones.
Contact classes (like kickboxing) are AEROBICS — they may seem more macho, but if the weight is not exhausting your muscles, it is not doing ANYTHING for your bone density and it is doing very very little for you muscles if it is doing anything.
What you ask, should you do then? A unique routine designed for you. This does not mean a workout you got from a magazine, nor does it mean something that a trainer pulls out of their ass on the fly. A unique routine takes into account your strengths and weaknesses as well as your goals. It is designed to get you the results you want but also the results you NEED. For example, if you have bad knees, there is little point in working on getting you washboard abs and ignoring your knees. A unique workout works on strengthening to protect your knees as well as whatever goal you want such as abs.
