Stretching

Oh how boring — the stretch.

Well it could be the difference between being healthy and being injured. Especially as we age, people need to stretch in order to not only feel good but to prevent injury.

Tight hamstrings, painful IT bands, sore knees — often these are just failure to stretch. Sometimes that failure over a period of time will cause greater problems that require surgery so if you are not incorporating stretching into your routine, ask a professional Board Certified Personal Trainer to lay out a plan for you.

Fitness Nutrition Specialist

For those of you who do not know, I am certified with NASM as a Fitness Nutrition Specialist. This is a new certification that just came out last fall.

NASM researched all of the issues with the nutrition field and wanted to find a way for you, the consumer, to have nutrition information from trainers because personal trainers are in the field with you working on your body.

NASM worked with researchers from many universities including Penn State and University of California to find a way to utilize the program that is already available via the USDA.

The MY PLATE program that you have seen Michelle Obama going on about. It is not new, it is just renamed in order to make it simpler. It is still, however, complicated for many people to use on their own so using a Certified Fitness Nutrition Specialist will ensure that you use the program correctly.

Having a certification also prevents the consumer from going to just ANYONE who has a diet. Ask your trainer their credentials before you accept any program from them. Are they certified? Where did this program come from? These are the same questions whether you are talking about your workout or your nutrition.

How working out can affect your work

A study at the VU Medical Center in Amsterdam found that people who worked out at least twice a week took half the number of sick days than those who did not work out.

Great Job — Ben and Barbara!!!

SUPER CONGRATS to my clients Ben and Barbara Ridings for completing the Peachtree Road Race!!

You are an inspiration that regardless of age and circumstance, we can all do things we set our mind and training to!!

I am extremely proud of you!!

Organic and Vegan — Make sure they are still healthy

My brother in law is a vegan and an organic farmer and one of my favorite phrases of his is “just because it’s vegan does not make it healthy”

The same goes for organic.

Eating organic and eating lots of natural foods such as vegatables and fruits is of course a healthy thing for you. But organic cookies are still cookies. They are not going to make eating cookies magically good for you.

So your personal choices whatever they are (Vegan, Paleo, Vegetarian, Organic, Meataholic) are your own choices just remember that healthy eating comes from variety and from whole foods, it always has. There is no Twinkie Tree in your garden ;)
