Golf is a great sport for general health. You are walking (yes — WALK) and you are out on the course for a long time. Anyone who goes for a walk for several hours is getting a great low impact workout.

Golfers however have a high rate of injury. Why? Well a lot of it is conditioning, some of it is failure to warm up and some of it is muscle weakness or tightness.

Tight or weak muscles will cause your game to suffer too. You will compensate for those muscles by moving differently and your stroke will suffer.

Most golfers can work on their tight or weak muscles as well as their flexibility by adding just a few moves to their strength routine.

As a personal trainer, I get a lot of people asking me about not only fitness but weight loss and getting healthy. Eating is a HUGE key to both and without eating healthy, you really CAN’T get to a good weight or get fit.

Sure there are people who are thin who eat poorly. Look at models. Cigarettes and poor diet abound in the modeling industry. But this is also about LIVING LONGER and BEING HEALTHY.

Being thin is only a part of that. And truly for most of us, we cannot stay thin eating junk food.

Are you eating habits out of control. I always suggest that people with diabetes or hypertension go to visit a dietician but that is good advice for anyone. If you have no clue, try that.

BUT REMEMBER — it is a LIFESTYLE. It literally breaks my heart when a client says they are getting rid of the bad food and eating more good food. Viewing things as good or bad helps some people but makes most people feel that they are restricted.

So start to think in terms of WHOLE FOODS and less processed foods and if you need some recipe ideas, try my free recipe site douglasvilleweightloss.com

Everyone needs strength training. PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

Not the SAME exercises - that is for sure. But everyone needs some form of strength training.

As a refresher — strength training should be done with heavy weights. Classes with weights are AEROBICS — they are not strength training and they do nothing for your bones.

Contact classes (like kickboxing) are AEROBICS — they may seem more macho, but if the weight is not exhausting your muscles, it is not doing ANYTHING for your bone density and it is doing very very little for you muscles if it is doing anything.

What you ask, should you do then? A unique routine designed for you. This does not mean a workout you got from a magazine, nor does it mean something that a trainer pulls out of their ass on the fly. A unique routine takes into account your strengths and weaknesses as well as your goals. It is designed to get you the results you want but also the results you NEED. For example, if you have bad knees, there is little point in working on getting you washboard abs and ignoring your knees. A unique workout works on strengthening to protect your knees as well as whatever goal you want such as abs.

Well, my group fitness classes started today at the Chapel Hill Golds Gym here in Douglasville and it was lots of fun and a great class. This class is exclusive to my personal training clients. I really have never been a huge fan of group fitness classes for anything other than the rare cardio session. Mostly because there has never been a way to tailor them to individuals. Well by keeping it small and exclusive to my personal training clients I can really customize it and tailor it to the people who show up that particular day.

So I am very happy with how the first class turned out and thank you to everyone who got up nice and early to try it out. Next class is Saturday and I hope to see many of my personal training clients using this as an extra workout to get the motivation and workout that the need.

Weight Loss is a challenge for anyone. There is no magic diet plan or potion or pill that will make it simple. I had a client recently tell me they were going on a new diet where they were not to work out. At first I thought I didn’t hear her properly since there are fistfuls of studies showing that working out helps weight loss and increases muscle mass so you are a more lean fit machine — not to mention all the health benefits.

So while I encourage people to try new things, when something sounds too good to be true — IT IS. Check with your doctor and see what he thinks about your new pill or whacky program where exercise is a no-no. I can almost hear him laughing right now.

Until then, accept that weight loss is an equation. You need to eat fewer calories and you need to burn more calories. The best way to do this is to eat a healthy diet full of real food that is fresh and not processed and to increase your activity to burn more calories. Now that is the simple plan — even if it requires more work, I think you will like the results
