All About Gluten Part Two

So we are back on the All About Gluten project so on to one of the most asked questions.

Should I go Gluten Free?

If you have been diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity you must go gluten free. It is dangerous for you to eat gluten and you could do permanent damage to your digestive system.

If you have not been diagnosed, you should talk to your doctor. Your digestive problems may not have anything to do with gluten — or they may be caused by it — but the same symptoms such as bloating and digestive problems can be caused by Crohns disease and even some cancers such as Ovarian or Colon Cancer. So it is best to talk to your doctor if you have symptoms.

Going gluten free for anyone without symptoms is tough. You will have to scrutinize everything you put in your mouth — not just your bread. Gluten is in pasta, soups, seasonings, salad dressings and tons of products you would not expect. And going gluten free does not necessarily mean healthy. You could be pulling very healthy products from your diet or you could be adding products like gluten free brownies.

If you do choose to go gluten free whether by necessity or by choice, know this — the most healthy and successful people who drop gluten and are not vitamin deficient do so using WHOLE FOODS. They do not use the ultra processed packaged foods screaming gluten free from the shelf but instead focus on fruits, vegetables, lean protein and gluten free grains such as quinoa.

All About Gluten Part One

Ok so everything in the universe seems to be putting out a gluten free product. Why you ask? and should you go gluten free? This will be in two parts because I expect it to be long but here is all you ever wanted to know about Gluten….

What it Gluten?

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.

Is it bad for me?

Gluten is not bad for the majority of the population. There is a disease known as celiac disease where your body has a negative response to any form of gluten and you will be very ill if you do not get gluten out of your diet. There are also people who do not have celiac disease but have gluten sensitivity which is harder to pinpoint but the problems are digestive problems, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, anemia and fatigue. Both celiac disease and gluten sensitivity need to be diagnosed by your doctor who may have you try a gluten free diet as one of the diagnostic tools.

For the rest of us, Gluten is not dangerous and it is the thing that makes dough stretchy and bread spongy so most of us love it. It is also in a very large variety of products such as sauces, soups and even salad dressing and soy sauce.

Work Out — Live Longer

A study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology reports that 7 hours of moderate activity per week reduces your chance of early death by 24% GO FOR A WALK — LIVE LONGER!!

Cooking Your Own Meals helps control your weight

Yes a lot of people like to eat out and restaurant eating has changed from something we did in the 1960s and 1970s as a treat to something we do all the time.

Eating out increases your chances of being overweight and makes any diet very difficult to stick to. Why? Because YOU DON’T CONTROL IT.

Yes, there are healthy options but you still don’t control your portions or the cut of meat or the amount of dressing put on your salad.

Eating at home is completely under your control. The temptation is lower and the “unknown” is not there. You can make so many healthy delicious options at home it is almost mind boggling.

Trans Fat – The Poison you ingest

Trans fat is literally a poison. It is horrible for you and causes a wealth of health problems. Why then do we keep eating it? Read your labels. Through huge lobby budgets and creative advertising, there is an “acceptable level” of trans fat allowed in food products. Is there a healthy level of rat poison you should eat? Of course not, so you should not eat any trans fat either. Read your labels. Words like Intersified and Hydrogenated – TAKE A PASS. Trans fat is just a way for food companies to have a longer shelf life and make more money. You do not NEED to support that. You do need to support your health and should put it first.
