Sometimes it is hard to understand on your own what your strengths and weaknesses are when it comes to strength training. Do you ever see someone running in your neighborhood and just know that it is not the exercise for them. Or do you see someone who just gets better and better every time you see them go by. I have seen both.
I see people wearing braces and really trying with little success and more and more injuries. Sometimes it is not a simple fix. Sometimes they are just not ever going to be successful at a particular sport because of a pre-existing injury or limitation.
But more often than not, what is causing them problems is often easily corrected with a personalized strength and/or stretching program. Some people literally just need a couple of stretches to stop their problem.
But here is the complicated part. Everyone is different. So without an assessment, it is impossible for any personal trainer to just “give you some moves”. Be honest, what are you struggling with? And if money is tight, be honest about that too. Getting you on a program that works with all the things that make you unique is really the ultimate goal.
Yes, you think golf is a non-contact sport so you don’t immediately think of injury but 62% of golfers will incur an injury while playing golf. Back injuries were the most common and lack of conditioning and poor mechanics are the main causes.
No, I am not getting soft or waxing poetic. It is a reality. Cardiovascular exercise is an expression of caring for yourself. Often we put ourselves last in the sacrifice of family and work and community but the reality is that we will fail to be able to do our best at our roles in those families and professions if we are unhealthy (or dead). Harsh? Perhaps. But cardiovascular exercise promotes health, weight loss, immunity and a strong heart — do I really need to continue?
Love yourself and your family enough to take care of yourself by doing your cardio EVERY SINGLE DAY. And nagging those family members who are not is also an expression of love.
Sometimes, it seems like the world is rushing by so fast, that your kids are half-grown before you have a chance to catch your breath. Then, one day you notice that their eating habits and fitness habits are very different from what you remember from your childhood. Times have changed. When we were kids, it was easy to just jump on your bike and explore the neighborhood. Nobody thought about predators and people who wanted to harm their kids. Now, the world is a less magical place. And kids have many more things to entertain them indoors that take time away from outdoor play.
It is now a challenge to get the kids out of the house. You are battling the TV and the video games which can be way more entertaining than what you have planned. You need to work at it! Get your kids to help you work in the yard, if you have one. If you are an apartment dweller, look into getting a plot at a community garden with your child. They will take immense pride in their garden.
Another source of family fun can be a regular hike, bike ride or walk. There seems to be an age in between babies and pre-teens where this is more difficult, but try it, it just may be a great, fun thing to do together.
Another great place for your kids to see what a great parental example of fitness you are is at the gym. If your kids meet the age requirements for the club, add them to your membership. You could be setting them on their way to having great health FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIFE!! What better gift can you give them? It is like giving them a great education; it will keep giving long after you are gone from this earth.
Going to the gym can be a great thing for you to do with your kids. I see people all the time going to classes with their kids. And not just Moms, I see lots of Dads and sons heading to classes too. Sometimes, I even see grown children coming to the gym with their parents and their own children. What a great way to spend time with your family.
My point here is simple, try something new with your family. You may just be surprised at how much fun you are having staying in shape.
