Alcohol Consumption and Your Weight

Whether you are looking to lose weight or not, you should review how you use alcohol. From a caloric standpoint, there are better choices if you want to indulge. A glass of wine or beer (8 oz) has between 60 and 180 calories depending on brand. A pina colada has 500 calories per 8 oz. serving and a cosmopolitan has 290 calories per 8 oz. serving. So, if you want to reduce calories, consider cutting back or eliminating alcohol.

Liquid Calories

You need water to live. Water has no calories, but the same cannot be said for a lot of the drinks we consume. Read the number of servings and the calories per serving on anything you drink. Soda has 150 calories in a 12 oz can. Some juice drinks have more than 300 calories per bottle. Some coffee drinks can pack 600 calories per container. Watch these drinks and make sure they are not hurting your diet.

How Healthy Sleep can help a Healthy Weight

This is a story of not too much, but enough. A study at Columbia University found that getting less than 6 hours of sleep per night can increase your risk of obesity by 23%. This goes up to 50% when you get 5 or less. Yet, a study in Psychosomatic Medicine reveals that people that get a lot of sleep have similar complaints to people who sleep too little. Aim for a healthy sleep of 7-9 hours. Experiment and find out what works best for you!

Simple Math leads to Weight Loss

Losing weight is a simple math equation.

Calories In-Calories Out = pounds gained.

In order to lose weight, you need to have a deficit in this equation. Use more calories than you consume and you will lose weight.

Easy Nutrition Tip – Drink More Water

Everyone can use more water. Try to get 8 servings of 8 ounces. (Tea, coffee and cola take water OUT of your body so these do not count as water!) If you do not like plain water, try adding a slice of lemon or orange!
