Is Personal Training For Me?

Sometimes it is hard to know if you are doing a move in the gym correctly. I know this because I see people ALL DAY LONG who are beginners or regular gym goers who constantly do moves wrong. Sometimes so wrong that it makes them less effective or ineffective. And sometimes so wrong that it is unsafe.

Don’t assume that people know what they are doing just because they come to the gym a lot. A few personal training sessions can do wonders for your routine and your body. And as I have found with many experienced gym goers, it also tends to reduce your workout time to do it correctly. Yep, that’s right – REDUCE!! So if you are unsure what you should be doing or if you are doing it right, then why not invest in yourself and do a couple of personal training sessions.

And I donated a prize of some personal training to the Douglasville Chamber Classic so I hope to hear from the winner of that very soon to get them started toward a better body (and even better golf!)

Peachtree Picture from Douglasville’s Personal Trainer – Dave Hansey

Hello All,

It only took a million years to get my photo from the Peachtree Road Race. They have some 1980’s style system where you have to order an actual print and yes, while you can order online (whee, how 1990’s) you can’t instantly download your pics. They have to send you a print. Very crazy. But I finally got them!! So I had to scan them to make them modern — lol — but here I am crossing the finish line.

Stabilization Training for Athletes and Everyone!

The concept of balance seems like a simple one. It is thought of as a static process where you are still like when you had to balance on one foot in grade school. While you may appear still, your body is actually performing a series of very complex movements in order to “keep you balanced”. By now, you may be asking yourself why is balance important? Balance is a critical component to an athlete as well as everyone else for a variety of reasons.
Balance prevents injury. Without good balance, we risk injury from everyday tasks such as walking, stair climbing, lifting our children, etc. The athlete not only risks injury from all these factors but the stresses of his sport as well. And an athlete with poor balance faces loss of power in his movements which affect performance.
So how do you improve your balance? You do it with Neuromuscular stabilization training which is basically balance training. Since your body does not exist on one plane of motion, in order to improve your balance you are not going to do it on one plane of motion. That means you have to perform moves that challenge you. There are some easy ways to add stability training to your current workout without adding a lot of moves. First, stand up! Yes, that is right. Get off the weight machines, stop sitting and laying on the bench and stand up!
This puts your body in its natural position for balance. Next, perform dynamic movements. So instead of just doing squats up and down, try doing walking lunges or side lunges. Again, putting your body in a position where it naturally balances the movement. There are many steps to continually make the movement more challenging with products like bosu balls and stability balls. In the end though, the concept is to take what your body would do naturally and enable it to train to be better at it.
So if you were a baseball player, you would be training for better balance when throwing, hitting, running and sliding to prevent injury and get more power and speed. Same goes for a mother of small children who should be training for lifting, shifting loads from one arm to the other, etc. And as we age, since our bodies lose balance naturally, it is a critical training component to prevent falls and fractures.

Douglasville Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic — Great Prize from Me — 2 hours of personal training

The Douglasville Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic is coming up this week and wow — the thing is already sold out. I have donated a great prize – 2 hours of personal training which is worth around $150 so I am hoping the person who wins it uses this personal training to make a positive health change in their life and really gets into fitness!!!!

I am also offering all players and volunteers for the tournament a free body analysis. That is where I will look at your posture and movement to determine if you have any weak or tight muscles that should be worked on in your fitness or personal training routine in order to improve. Remember group fitness classes are great for cardio but they never do anything that is unique or specialized for you so for that you need personal training.

You can always call me or e-mail me if you are interested in a body analysis or personal training.

Good Luck to everyone is this week’s golf tournament!!!

Establish Your Team – Great Fitness with Personal Training and More

Earlier, this year, I discussed establishing a team. Let me review the concept. Your team is your special group of people who have knowledge to help you reach your goals.
Your doctor is a key player on the team. What does he say about your condition? Talk to him about strength training, I am sure he will be supportive.
Other people on your team are your personal trainer, if you have one. If you have no experience with strength training or do not know how to use a piece of equipment, don’t ask another gym member, they may not know either. Ask a professional, a certified personal trainer, and make them part of your team.
Your friends and family also fit on your team. These are your personal cheerleaders and people to work out with. Remember, they will offer their advice, but it should not take the place of advice from professional members of your team (such as your doctor, trainer, chiropractor, nurse, dietician, etc).
